Jackfruit Idli / Ponsa Idli

Ponsa Idli a konkani breakfast dish is a sweet dish made out of jackfruit pods. Ponosu means jackfruit in Konkani language. Some people also like to have this dish as a snack in the evening. To prepare the batter of this idli you can either use semolina or dosa rice. If you want to prepare Ponsa Idli as soon as possible then I suggest you to add semolina instead of Dosa rice. If you would like to taste other jackfruit sweet dishes then do check Jackfruit Mulik and Jackfruit Appam.

  3. Before removing the batter add crushed cardamom and blend again for few seconds.
  4. Place the batter in a bowl and mix semolina, roasted cashews and a pinch of salt.
  5. To make jackfruit idli's you need idli steamer which is available online as well as in stores.
  6. Add some water to the steamer and keep it on stove. Grease idli moulds with oil or ghee. Take a portion of batter in spoon or ladle and pour to the idli moulds.
  7. It should not be over filled and fill only 80% of the mould as the batter will expand after getting steamed.
  8. Repeat this procedure of filling the mould and keep it in the steamer and cover it with a lid.
  9. It will take around 15 minutes to cook the idli's. After 15 minutes remove the lid, take a knife or spoon and just poke to any portion of the idli. If it does not come out clean then you have to cook for few more minutes.
  10. Serve hot idli's with the topping of ghee or butter.

Note ::
  1. You can use dosa rice instead of semolina. If you are using dosa rice then soak it in water for half an hour and grind to a thick paste along with grated coconut and jackfruit pieces. Remaining procedure are same.
  2. Instead of grinding jackfruit pods you can add finely chopped jackfruit pieces to batter.
  3. You can use roasted cashew for garnishing instead of adding to batter.
